SecurityBack To Top
Q: Is a PDF safe from pirating, and/or are there more secure ways of publishing eBooks?
A PDF, if not protected, can in fact be spread around quite easily and stolen. However, there are ways to protect both the content of your PDF and your PDF from illegal distribution. To protect the actual content of the PDF, PDF Creator will help you protect the functionality of your PDF (cut/copy/paste control, password protection, etc) by allowing you to lock the content, making it difficult for a hacker to steal the content (images and text) and create an unprotected copy. To prevent the illegal distribution (someone stealing the eBook by forwarding it and the password to a friend) you may want to use one of two programs that we have reviewed. These programs are Secure eBook and Click Locker. Essentially, these programs turn your PDF into an executable file (.EXE). Each time someone clicks on your product to view it, a security check is done to see if this is the authorized computer that has access to the PDF. Only then is the product displayed. You have the ability to revoke access if someone asks for a refund, and if the file is being loaded on a different computer or it is no longer being paid for, it can be shut down. There is the ability for an end-user to move the file to another machine if they need to, but the original copy will then be disabled.
Q: Can you recommend an eBook software program that allows me to protect the material without irritating the user?
All eBook security software has a security interface that the end user must use. Any of the software that we recommend is of the highest caliber and should not be perceived as irritating. Most people are used to security portals when banking, paying bills or purchasing online (of course there are always exceptions.)

Q: How do I go about producing an eBook cover?
That's easy. There are many software packages that will guide you through the process. We have found what we think are the best ones available. To see our recommendations, check out the eBook Resource Center for a condensed list.
Q: Would you please explain how the eBook process works?
Q: How do I go about producing an eBook?
There are many elements to creating a marketable eBook product including writing the content, coming up with a good name, getting imagery and photos that support the theme, securing your eBook from illegal copying and all the pesky little details...like disclaimers and copyright rules. To look at a full range of resources, check out the eBook Resource Center
Q: I am having trouble downloading eBook Problem Solver. What should I do?
Please contact support@patobryan.com for customer assistance. They will be happy to assist you.
Q: How do I convert a PDF to HTML?
Good question. Easy to do. Do a google search on "PDF to HTML" and take your choice of (mostly) free programs.
Q: Can I import Word documents with screenshots into eBook Gold?
Yes! Just write up the text with the images in Word and then Save the file as HTML (File, Save As – then select HTML). You will end up with an HTML file and an images folder. The files can then be imported right into eBook Gold
Q: I want to make a video presentation of what is showing on my computer screen. How can I capture an onscreen demonstration (with audio commentary) for distribution in an eBook?
The best package that we have run into is called AllCapture from Balesio. Using this link, you will receive a 10% discount off the price of the software.
Q: I have been told that I need to create my copy in HTML format before I can import it for use in eBook Generator. How do I do this?
eBook Generator uses HTML as its format You can copy any HTML document that you have into eBook Generator. As an alternative, you can either create your content in Microsoft Word, save it as an HTML file, then copy it into eBook Generator; or type your content directly in eBook Generator using their step by step Wizard.
Q: Do you know of a product that can produce and secure an eBook that includes an MP3 file that could be sold as one download?
The simple way to solve your problem is to place the MP3 link into your eBook and then password protect the eBook. This way, only folks who have purchased your eBook will have access to the MP3 link. However, if someone were to crack into the eBook and get the link to the MP3 file, the link could be passed around. To solve that problem you could use a program like eBookGenerator which allows you to protect your eBook from anyone wanting to see the code and the actual link to your MP3.

Q: Do you have a recommendation for an EBook software program that uses a "flip-side by side" style?
We like Desktop Author for its page-turning capability. It's real slick.
Q: I am looking to create my first eBook. I have the files written. Which eBook software conversion program do you recommend and why?
We have several that we like a lot to accomplish this. Check out our recommendations at the eBook Resource Center where we offer an overview of each package.
Q: Demo and trial versions of eBook creators do not allow me to complete a sample eBook. How do you recommend I do that?
A sample eBook is built the exact same way as a full eBook. Our advice is to use eBook software to build your sample eBook and send that out. When you are satisfied with the sample, build the full eBook and send that out separately. Most software that we have on our list has a money back guarantee. We would recommend that you purchase software and try it out for real. Then if it does not work for you, you can get your money back. Our 2 most popular software packages are eBook Pro and eBook Starter
Q: Can you recommend an eBook software program that is easy to use but will allow the user to print only one page at a time?
Most eBook software programs have measures in place to control printing options. Unfortunately we are not familiar with the ability to restrict the option to one page at a time.
Q: Can you kindly tell me which of the eBook software packages has page-turning capability vs. just scrolling?
There are two such programs that we have come across. The first, Desktop Author, does require the user to download and install a separate reader (a DNL reader in this case). We've tried to steer a bit away from requiring users to have to download a separate reader; however, the DNL format seems to be gaining momentum and certainly the 3D page turning effects are impressive. The second program is called Uniflip and it takes your PDF and creates a fairly cool page flipping eBook. It is reasonably priced and has very responsive customer service.
Q: Can you recommend an eBook software program that helps me with the actual set up of the eBook pages?
Yes, there are several software products that are strong in page layout. Check out the eBook Software Development section by clicking here!
Q: Can you recommend an eBook software program that is easy to use and produces an attractive finished product that is also secure on the internet? I was considering eBook Generator and eCover Generator.
Check out the eBook Software Development section by clicking here! We have found that both eBook Generator (with full security features) and eCover Generator are solid products among the many. To explore security in more depth, check out eBook Security Packages for optional programs.
Q: Can you recommend a software program that allows me to embed sound files, animation, and videos?
Yes. Most of the programs we list on eBook Resource Guide do exactly that. Check out your options by clicking here.
Q: Can you recommend a software program that allows me to capture a screen shot that I may use in an eBook?
You can accomplish this without purchasing anything. Press the "print screen" key on your keyboard and paste it into almost any document.
Q: What can you tell me about EBOOK STARTER regarding its reliability, ease of use, and security?
You will find a lot of information about eBook Starter in our eBook Resource Center. Customer feedback suggests that the software is very easy to use and offers a free trial.
Q: Can I make an eBook for online distribution and also burn it to a CD?
Essentially, any downloadable eBook can be burned to a disk.
Q: Which programs would you recommend to help me design an eBook cover?
We highly recommend several. You can review them in the eCover section of the eBook Resource Center.
Q: What is the cost of Mailloop?
Currently, Mail Loop Professional 7.0 costs $397 plus the cost of optional upgrades. A "lifetime upgrades" option is available for $137 for those who like to keep their software updated. Comparable online versions of Mail Loop are available for $20 - $50 per month, so the onetime payment will look like a deal.
Q: Will Cover Software Pro work with Adobe Photoshop Elements?
No. Cover Software Pro only works with the full-featured Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and higher.
Q: Is there a program that handles it all; eBook creation, security, commerce and distribution?
Unfortunately, no. There is not one piece of software that does it all. There are dozens of combinations that could work, some better than others. Here is one software solution that will most likely help you meet your goals. For creating your eBook with security: eBook Pro. For a commerce and marketing solution: 1Shopping Cart. For an eBook cover: Extreme 3D Covers. Each has a money back guarantee. Be sure to check out the details if you would like at the eBook Resource Center.
Q: Can you recommend a package(s) that can create a pdf and take care of security?
Creating the PDF is easy. We like and recommended PDF Creator. It is offered at a reasonable price, been around for years, and allows your manuscript to be easily converted to PDF. After being made with PDF Creator, you can then secure your manuscript using Secure eBook. For between $.50 to a $1 per eBook, you can encrypt your eBooks easily and turn it off if someone asks for a refund. Very easy to use.
Q: Which eBook software package(s) provide the security features I may want while allowing me to use most eCommerce solutions to receive payments?
The easiest way to integrate an eBook with an eCommerce solution is to create your eBook in pdf format, secure it with at simple password, and it will become available for download after payment is made.
Q: Can you recommend a software package (such as an autoresponder) that will help me stay in contact with my customers and prospects?
For information on autoresponders, check out our Autoresponder Programs section in the eBook Resource Center.
Q: Of all the programs you review, which are the most popular ones that also provide safety for both the user and publisher?
Great question. Our 2 most popular programs are eBookPro and eBook Generator . They both provide excellent security for eBook publishers that prevents giving away free copies. And since both rely on a standard PC download and installation process for users, the trust factor for your customers should be high. You can read an overview of each package here: http://www.ebookresourcecenter.com/ebook-development-software.
Q: Can you recommend an eBook software package that allows me to create a chart which includes hyperlinks as well as space for the user to include his/her notes?
Adding a page with hyperlinks works in most of the packages that we recommend; however, considering these two features, we would recommend Desktop Author. According to the Desktop Author website, using the “web based” version of the eBook, users can add “notes” pages or sections for users. We have found success with Desktop Author in the past and have received great feedback from users/customers on their service.
MACs & eBooksBack To Top
Q: Which eBook software program(s) can I use with a Mac?
Unfortunately, many of the software packages that we review do not support the Mac work environment. (Most software is created to work on the PC.) We suggest that MAC users focus on using the PDF format for their eBooks. The best option may be Adobe Acrobat. It has great security and cut/copy/paste abilities. One of our clients has sold thousands of his $79.95 White Paper in PDF format and while he may have some theft, the sales keep coming in. We have found that basic PDF security and functionality is good enough and can really get you 99% of the features and protection for your project. Check out our MAC section at the eBook Resource Center for all MAC options.
Q: Is there a single eBook application which allows me to use a lot of graphic images as well as sound clips in a Mac format?
Your can embed your audio and video files using Adobe Acrobat. Another option that will always work is to ebbed links in your eBook for as many pictures, sound, and video clips as you would like. The user's default media players will open and play them.
Q: Is there any way to make your recommended eBook software packages work on a MAC?
Yes, with some caveats. You can produce eBooks on a MAC by using a PC emulator (which basically makes your MAC behave like a PC), and installing any of the eBook software from our guide. However, the output (your eBook) will only be viewable on a PC (or on another MAC with a PC emulator).
Q: Will my eBook be protected if I compile it on a MAC using Adobe Acrobat?
We would recommend that you create the eBook and password protect it using Adobe. While this does not stop someone from sharing the eBook and the password with their friends or whomever, it still provides an added layer and a sense of security that will deter a lot of decent people that end up being online thieves.
Q: Your guide says that eBook Pro software is not Mac compatible. Does that mean that Mac users could not view my eBook or that my eBook cannot be created on a Mac?
Unfortunately both. You can use eBookPro to build your eBook on a MAC if you have a PC emulator. However, eBookPro's output cannot be read using a MAC without a PC emulator. If you want something that is compatible with Mac, working with a PDF is probably your best bet. Check out the MAC section of the eBook Resource Center for more information.
Q: I want the end-users to be able to read my e-books with PC and Mac. What can you suggest?
eBooks created on a MAC (using a necessary PC emulator), can be read on any PC. In order to be read on a MAC, the end user must also have a PC emulator installed.
Q: Can I securely distribute my eBook to MAC users?
The strongest security strategy we know of for a MAC is in Adobe Acrobat which will restrict cut/copy/paste/ save functionality. Additionally, you can protect your eBook with a password.
Q: Can eBook Generator be used on a MAC?
Unfortunately, no.
Q: Will eBook software compatible with a MAC be available any time soon?
There are some programs in the works. Stay tuned and we will email you as soon as they are released.
Q: Can you recommend eBook software that will allow me to import my material (created on a Mac) into eBook format without paying someone else to do it?
Our best recommendation is creating it in pdf format. Check out the MAC & eBooks section of the eBook Resource Center for explanations and products you can use.

At this time, the only available version is online. We are looking into printable formats.

The eBook Resource Center has a list and review of the features of many of the products you need to develop, create, secure, and market your eBook. eBook ProBack To Top
Q: Can you input Chinese characters using eBook Pro?
eBook Pro can handle any language. Just create your document in a word processor and copy and paste it in.
Q: What is the price of eBook Pro? Is this a one-time payment or are there additional charges?
eBook Pro is in fact a onetime payment, currently $197. No further payments are necessary.
Q: Can I order eBook Pro via phone.
Yes. As an easy alternative, their online sales site is easy to use. You'll be set up in no time!
Q: I have seen eBook pro listed as a scam on Google. Is it a scam - should I trust this product?
eBook Pro is definitely not a scam. We bought it ourselves and we have many clients happily using it! The eBook pro ad you are referring to may be from a pirated site.
Q: Can I write my eBook in Microsoft Word and import it into eBook Pro?
Yes and no. You cannot import the Word document directly but you will be able to cut and paste from Word right into an eBookPro template.
Other Good QuestionsBack To Top
Q: How can I set up a store front to sell my eBook on the web?
We use 1ShoppingCart for all of our eCommerce. There are many other options available as well, each offering different features. If you are looking for a custom solution, Andrew owns a web design/marketing firm that can build a custom store for you. But it would be your most expensive option.
Q: Do you have any suggestions on how to sell eBooks now that eBay no longer allows it?
The eBay policy change has been a major bummer. We are looking for a good solution to help counteract the eBay "disaster" for some of our more active eBook sellers. We'll keep you posted if we find anything out. And please let us know if you find a solution around the eBay problem!
Q: Can you help me set up my eBook project, soup-to-nuts?
Unfortunately not. Our own workload does not allow us to take on outside projects. We don't know any reputable companies that provide this service - but they must be out there somewhere. If you find one, let us know.
Q: Do you have any financial arrangements with the software & programs that you are promoting?
We do get affiliate credit from each vendor when someone makes a purchase that simply helps cover the costs of providing our free website to you. You do not pay any more because of this. It is part of their marketing budget. But we only offer software that we think is worthy and have thousands of people who view, comment, and purchase the items that we have assembled.
Q: How large is too large for an eBook? I do not want the size to prevent users from either purchasing or easily downloading it?
The download size for a 500 page pdf eBook would probably be 1 Megabyte or larger assuming that you optimize your pictures and link the music files (not embed the files in the document). This is a reasonably common file size which should be easily downloaded by the majority of computer users.
Q: What should I do if I have any trouble with a purchase made through a link from your site?
Great question. We do not directly sell any of the products on our site - the product owners do. The best advice would be to contact their customer service, usually through a "contact us" link on their site. If you don't have success, let us know and we will do our best to get you in touch with them.
Q: Does your firm provide the service of converting Word documents into finished eBooks, including covers? If not, can you make a recommendation for a company that can?
Unfortunately, we do not provide eBook creation services. We are looking into finding a company that will provide eBook conversion and Cover creation; however, we don’t have any solid referrals for you at this time. From our initial research, the eBook conversion service might well be much more expensive than any of the eBook software package on our list. If you want to get set up quickly, you might just want to use PDF Creator and convert the Word files into PDF format. Then use Extreme 3D Covers which is also inexpensive and you would have a completed product. As soon as we find some good referral sources, we will update everyone.
Q: Can you recommend a consultant or firm that can help me bring my eBook from the writing stage all the way through to market?
We have not run into anyone that we think is skillful and reliable enough for us to recommend. They are probably out there but we just haven't found them. If you do end up finding someone to help you, please do let us know.
Q: Can you recommend a person or company that can write an eBook for me?
We would suggest you do a Google search on “eBook writing services”. You will find a handful of sites that offer this kind of service. Also, you can post your project to www.elance.com and folks that do this work will bid on the job of creating your eBook for you.
